Christa is a single mother of two boys ages seven and eight. She works for PetSmart and enjoys what she does as a pet groomer. Christa and her boys lived in a 1-bedroom apartment until they were told to move as the property was going to be demolished. They didn’t have anywhere else to go that she could afford. Her ex-husband who was unreliable and an alcoholic offered no child support for her and her children.
This led her to the Beyond Home residential program. Very shortly after she moved the transmission in her car got really bad. The staff at Beyond Home referred Christa to Hands and she was approved for the TLC Program to have the car assessed and repaired. Unfortunately, the Hands team found the transmission to be beyond repair. She was admitted into the Lift Up Program to be placed with a donated vehicle that would meet her family’s transportation needs. It was key for Christa to have a reliable vehicle as students were returning to in person learning at the schools.
The right car soon became available and was prepared in the Hands shop. On June 14, 2021, Christa was placed in a 2007 Kia Spectra. She will now have the opportunity to receive low cost automotive services and training in the care of her car for up to three years from Hands. Christa notes, “Being a single mother has been challenging but the rewards, success and happiness that I see in my boys’ smiles makes the perseverance in the hard work very much worth it. Thank you for this opportunity to help myself with furthering my self-sufficiency journey.”
