Sheila: Building a Life of Peace

Women coming to Hands want hope and opportunity

Sheila had been living on her own for 13 years since she was 15 after leaving a very abusive home to try and find a life of peace. She reached out to Hands last year being in desperate need of a vehicle. Sheila has three children, and is working full time at the front desk of a hotel. Sheila and her children took the bus every day to the grocery store, school, work, and doctor’s appointments. There were days when there was not enough time to make all of the bus connections, so occasionally her children would have to miss school. Through this adversity, she managed to save for her portion of the vehicle placement cost. One of our partner shops – Stan’s Automotive of Lafayette – prepared a donated van and personally handed the keys to her and the children. Sheila is deeply grateful knowing her life has been changed, and she will be able to move forward in her journey to self-sufficiency. Sheila and her children will have a safe and warm car for the winter and years to come!
